Negative Effects of Gambling
Gambling is the act of betting money with the expectation of profits
Professional bettors put little faith in the favorite/underdog, home/away pointspread analysis that so often is cited by gridiron “handicappers.” It’s just another method of backfitting dismissed as irrelevant by wiseguys.
Given the massive popularity of the NFL, it’s surprising that the sport is shrouded in so much betting misunderstanding and misconception.
Myth #4: Bettors have the edge early in the season because oddsmakers and bookmakers need more time to assess the teams.
Myth #8: Statistical wagering trends are important.
Reality: Oh, yes it is. Think of it this way: If you’re a successful gambler, why risk serious money on just a few games where a freak play or an official’s call can make you a loser? The wider the net is tossed, the less of a factor luck becomes in the outcome.
Reality: Nowadays, with nearly everyone having access to the Internet, it’s not so much the information as how well that data is interpreted. Knowing the strength of a team is worthless if you don’t also know the strength of the opponent.
Reality: More than any misconception, this myth probably best illustrates the difference between how professionals and amateurs think. A detailed, in-depth assessment of NFL teams begins more than a month before the opening kickoff. Bookmakers still may occasionally receive information regarding injuries or weather changes before players, but thanks to technology, that advantage often can be measured in seconds. That’s probably not just luck.
Myth #7: Bettors can win by concentrating on a specific conference, division or region.
Myth #3: Bookmakers have inside information that they use to establish “trap” games.
Myth #9: It’s never wise to bet on rumors
. It’s not enough to have one specific area of expertise because the NFL schedule demands that teams play half their games outside their own division. Professional bettors generally wager approximately the same amount on every game they play. A professional gambler believes that if a game is worth betting, it’s worth betting significantly. For example, if a professional bettor hears a rumor that Peyton Manning has the flu and is too ill to play quarterback for the Colts, he’ll quickly bet on Indianapolis’ opponent. Traditionally, how the house fares on these lopsided games, called “decisions,” determines whether books win or lose.
Reality: Not likely. Professional gamblers believe all their bets are good ones; that’s why they make them.
Reality: Actually, sophisticated gamblers bet a lot of games. Since most lines are accurate, the bettor takes little betting risk in chasing a rumor.
Myth #2: Betting lines get balanced action.
Myth #5: Professional gamblers pick their spots, betting just a couple of games a weekend.
Reality: While the goal is to construct a betting line that is of equal attraction to both favorite and underdog players, it rarely works out that way. If the rumor is correct, the gambler has stolen the line on a game that’s certain to change. Historically, the first six weeks of the season have been very kind to bookmakers. The betting line is created and adjusted to meet the opinion of professional gamblers because it is they, not the casual fan, who bets serious money on the game.
Myth #1: Betting lines are created to beat the public.
Myth #6: Wiseguys bet more on games they really like.
Reality: More hours are spent analyzing the opening week of the NFL season than any other is. Reality: Technical analysis may be popular but it’s hardly meaningful. More typically, a third of the games on the NFL schedule will have an insignificant amount of betting to cause much of a concern, another third will have active but balanced betting and the m88bet remaining third will have mostly one-way action. Those days are gone as inside information has all but ceased to exist and there is no such thing as a “trap” game.
Let’s try to separate betting myth from reality:
Reality: With the exception of the Super Bowl, the public plays almost no role in the linemaking process. The concept of a “best bet” is a media creation that is foreign to professional sports bettors. If the rumor is false, then he’s played Indianapolis’ opponent at a fair price. While it’s true that teams often do not tip their hand during the preseason or against weak, non-divisional foes, players are in no better position to uncover this deception than are bookmakers. Many years ago, if a bookmaker found out some significant nugget of data, he might try to lure the bettor to the “wrong” side
The two go hand in hand. Over time, it becomes a habit, and eventually an obsession that can’t be overcome. The addiction robs a gambler of all the productive time and leads to loss of efficiency at work. Rehabilitating the gambling addicts needs money and time, and the process is not very easy. On giving a serious consideration to the negative effects of gambling, we realize that it is best avoided.
? Similar to how an individual keeps consuming substances like drugs or alcohol to experience an altered mental state, he continues to gamble. In the following sections of this Buzzle article, we discuss the negative effects of gambling on the individual and society.
? People continue gambling with the greed of winning money. Due to lost mental peace, they may ill-treat their spouse and children. The greed never ends and they keep betting more and more. In spite of the losses incurred, they continue betting. When they lose the money they had risked, they further gamble to recover the lost amount and it becomes a vicious circle even they can’t escape from.
? Additionally, rehabilitation and public assistance systems are taxed.
? People who fall prey to gambling tend to remain away from their families and waste money on other bad practices. A study by the same university suggested that 73% of the individuals who are imprisoned are found to be problem gamblers.
Games offered in casinos, table games like poker, Red Dog, and Blackjack, as also electronic games like Slot Machine and Video Poker are some of the common types of gambling. Addiction to gambling, coupled with substance abuse can make the gamblers physically abusive towards their family. It soon becomes a habit that can’t be broken.
? They start borrowing money and take secret loans. Card games, coin tossing, and dice-based games are some non-casino based forms of gambling. Forget satisfaction or peace, it is not even refreshing in the real sense. Sports betting and arbitrage betting are the other types. The addiction gets on to the gamblers to such an extent that they fail to think wisely before acting. The stress of risking huge amounts of money or the frustration after losing it can increase the tendency of abuse in gamblers. According to the National Research Council, 10 to 17% of the children of problem gamblers have been abused and so have 25 to 50% of the partners of problems gamblers.
? According to a research by NCPG, 76 percent of problem gamblers are likely to have a major depressive disorder.
? Research has shown that gambling can lead to harmful behavior in people. The National Council of Problem Gambling (NCPG) describes this type of gambling behavior as problem gambling.
? Gambling is practiced as a means of recreation. Thus, gambling practices cause a huge financial burden on the families of the affected and on the society at large.
? Problem gamblers and addicts tend to abuse their family members. It can drag you into crime, gambling isn’t fun.
? Children of parents who are problem gamblers or gambling addicts tend to feel abandoned and angry, further increasing stress and leading to strained family relations.
? An Austrian study said that around 1 in 5 suicidal patients had a gambling problem.
Initially, one looks at gambling as a way to run away from life’s problems, or from stress, anger, and loneliness. The decision to gamble money is based on three parameters namely; how much to bet, the predictability of the event, and the conditions agreed upon, between the gamblers. The skill of a gambler lies in weighing the three parameters and making a decision about what amount should be staked and how much should be expected in return.
? The stress from gambling may lead to health issues like ulcers, stomach problems, muscle pains, headaches, and problems with sleep.
? A majority of those addicted to gambling have substance abuse disorders.
? Addiction to gambling has been linked with substance abuse. Some take to substance abuse to supplement the high they get from winning huge sums while gambling. This proves to be detrimental to their social and family life. To add to the so-called merry atmosphere, gamblers often smoke or drink while playing.
? Gambling can lead to criminal activities. Because of this, they land in worse situations and take the wrong decisions in life.
Mental and physical health problems, financial issues, and conflicts in the family are among the common negative effects of gambling. Gambling = Thoughtless Expenditure + Waste of Time
? Apart from absence at work and drop in efficiency, a common observation is that gamblers tend to steal money and engage in fraudulent behavior to recover from financial losses incurred when gambling, or to get more money to bet.
Compulsive gambling leads to bankruptcy
? Gambling at the cost of one’s job results in a decline in the quality of his professional life. The addiction leads people to continue with gambling irrespective of whether they earn or lose in the deal. Some go that way to forget the sorrow of losing big sums when gambling.
? As gambling leads to increased criminal activities, in a way, gamblers add to the burden on prisons and the legal system.
? Gambling has proven to be addictive. The effect is similar to that of having a drug or a drink, which is why gambling changes one’s mental state and mood.
You could be at gunpoint or holding the gun. They tend to stay away from their near ones, resulting in distrust between them and their loved ones.
? According to the University of New York, in people with alcohol use disorders, the chances of developing an addiction to gambling are 23 times higher.. Betting is a mentally taxing activity, and as one goes on risking more and more money, anxiety starts building.
? The addiction to gambling can leave one in bankruptcy. The addiction has negative effects on one’s physical and mental health and it proves to be detrimental to one’s social, personal, and professional life. Thus, gambling can have a grave economic impact which is difficult to reverse.
? Substances of abuse are served at casinos and in pubs and clubs, thus increasing the likelihood of gamblers consuming them. It only leads to a thoughtless expenditure of money and valuables.
? Over time, the practice of gambling starts becoming a habit and begins to have damaging effects at psychological, physical, and social levels. They engage in gambling activities at the cost of their time with family and friends. Their debt keeps building and it may reach an amount that exceeds their capacity to repay.
? The costs of treating compulsive gamblers are huge. Six to eight million people in America are estimated to have a gambling problem.
? Studies show that children with a sibling or parent addicted to gambling, are more likely to take to substance abuse.
? According to a study by the George State University, 50% of the problem gamblers commit crime. Their mental state can even lead to suicidal tendencies.
Gambling refers to the betting of money on an event with an uncertain outcome, with the intent of winning additional wealth. A recreational activity is supposed to be refreshing and relaxing, but something like gambling is contrary to the very purpose of recreation. It causes a decline in his/her work performance, thus hampering his career.
? Gamblers often exhibit mood swings and a strangely secretive behavior
If Pennsylvania cannot pass an online gambling bill then the tides may change. At that time, there were in fact three states who chose to allow gambling. On the other hand, many people believe that individuals have the right to choose whether or not they want to gamble, and it is not up to the government to decide. While three states currently have legalized online gambling industries, there are multiple other stays who are considering following suit.
Before, online gambling was seen as being another source of revenue. Congress has been urging the Federal government to back them up in continuing the ban, and to get the Restoration of America’s Wire Act bill passed. Due to a decision made by the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel in 2011, states now have the autonomy to choose for themselves without interference from Federal law. It’s not soon, but it’s happening. In addition, there are various TV shows and specials that are broadcasting poker and gambling. It was only two years ago that a few states launched major online gambling sites. All 50 states have currently refrained from passing a bill to legalize online gambling, poker, or other casino games. One way or another, there will be changes in 2016. There have been many advocates for anti-gambling agendas, including Sheldon Adelson. Whether you are for online gambling or opposed to it, the notion that Congress would realistically unite and pass a vote is not probable. Including California, these four states represent the forefront of the pro-online-gambling movement in the US. In fact, Nevada had already been preparing an online gambling bill prior to the opinion. In 2016, however, it is much more likely.
While it might seem very slow, gambling has seen an increase in users in the US. Since then, however, online gambling in the United States came to an abrupt stop. The bottom line is that this will take some time. If the states pass a bill to legalize gambling, then we can get back online and improve our poker skills. Here a few things to keep in mind when thinking about the future of online gambling.
1. Online Gambling is Inevitable
2. Federal Legislation Probably won’t happen
Politicians often have strong opinions on online gambling. Not to mention, less that four years have passed since the OLC opinion regarding the Wire Act allowed individual states the chance to consider passing online gambling bills. In that case, a state might not launch an online gambling business until 2017 or 2020.. Delaware, Nevada, and New Jersey all brought gambling to our browser. People are learning new ways to utilize online gambling beyond merely direct revenue. Adelson’s online gambling ban, called “RAWA,” was effectively disabled. One thing that many people haven’t considered is Pennsylvania. This is the newest development of states that look to pass a bill on online gambling. Both New Jersey and Delaware had m88 online expedited bills. Despite this situation, there are many reasons indicating that online gambling http://abcnews.go.com/Sports could become legal in the United States. Most state legislatures have only recently considered online gambling to be an issue. The idea is that if Pennsylania were to permit online gambling down the road then other states would follow as well. It is unlikely that it will be revisited. The way that it has been panning out, there will be multiple state the pass an online gambling bill prior to 2020. This year, Poker Central was created. Because of this, state will have to spend lots of time getting their lawyers in the loop and updated on the ongoing issues, and will take time to craft the proposal bill and explain the pros and cons. This is a TV channel that will soon be dedicated 24/7 to poker. Now this is not the case. Federal legislation will most likely not play a big role. Online gambling can be used in a variety of different ways, as casinos are quickly realizing. Online gambling presents a very controversial issue in the United States. These sources of media are helping to build the hype. Because of the delay in passing a state budget, it is still possible for a gambling bill to be passed before 2016. Blackjack and other gambling games have been a large part of our society, yet their presence online is in question. Also, the fact that there is significant investment pouring in shows that there is light at the end of the tunnel for the industry. Many people are radically opposed to it, claiming that the game can cause the loss of thousand or millions of dollars and ruin lives
A toll-free number for wagering was also provided.
Gordon Mitchnick, 58, Joseph Schneider, 39, Arthur Rossi, 66, and Claude Ferguson, 43, were charged with crimes including enterprise corruption and first-degree promoting gambling in a 57-count indictment, Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said in a statement.
“Illegal gambling is not a victimless crime,” Thompson said. Thompson said he believes the bust is the biggest of its kind to be brought by local prosecutors.
It was not clear how much money was handled over the life of the operation or for how long it existed.
Most forms of gambling are illegal in New York state, with legal gambling limited to Indian reservation casinos, betting on horse races and Las Vegas-style casinos.
The defendants face up to 25 years in prison if convicted of the top charge of enterprise corruption, prosecutors said. Additional arrests are expected in the ongoing investigation.. By Laila Kearney

Mitchnick is the suspected leader of the ring, which operated in Brooklyn and other areas, prosecutors said. He is accused of purchasing more than 20 houses to help him launder money. “It preys on peoples’ vulnerabilities and directly leads to money laundering, loansharking and a host of other crimes,” Thompson said.
The operation accepted $927 million in wagers on National Football League games during the 2015 season, prosecutors said.
At its peak, the operation had $200,000 in monthly bills including salaries for a team of employees located in San Jose, Costa Rica, who ran a call center for betters, prosecutors said.
Clients were solicited by word of mouth and on internet gambling forums.

The group operated several password-protected websites that allowed gamblers to place bets on a series of professional and collegiate sports games, prosecutors said.

One purchased, users can download an extensive amount of content, including files to cover past seasons. Players can simulate individual games as well as entire seasons or multiple seasons. Older versions of the game tended to get hampered by flaws in the interface, but the newer versions of the game have improved these flaws and shortcomings.

There are several other simulations available, including the following:
Action! PC Football
The best simulations do not focus on graphics at all. The database of players dates back to the 1950s, so players can also simulate historical seasons.
Front Office Football

The game has gone through many enhancements focusing in both general management aspects of gameplay as well as the simulation part of the football games themselves. Later editions added the ability to call plays, but the game’s main focus has been on the front office aspects (hence, the name).

They all lived in a two bedroom apartment. He backed Walcott into the ropes. He was undersized for a heavyweight. The computer’s result: Marciano knocked out Ali in the thirteenth round. And he could be incredibly tight with a buck. His wife, Barbara, was unable to have the large family Rocky wanted. Ali was in retirement too, after having his title stripped for refusing the draft. It hit Walcott’s jaw with the sound of a baseball bat. There would be good food, a nice check for a few words, and still enough time to fly back for his birthday. The pilot and his two passengers were instantly killed. Rocco inherited his father’s toughness, for he survived a deadly bout of pneumonia when he was two. Jude’s oil while in his corner waiting for the start of that fight.
Outwardly Marciano’s life after boxing was quite successful – unlike many fighters, he kept his money and his wits. Ali complained about his ‘loss’, alleging the computer was made in Alabama.
Everett M. The pilot landed the plane in a field in Newton, Iowa, and rammed into a lone tree in the middle of the field. The man recovered, but never fought again.
(An experiment was performed on Rocky’s punching power. Rocky hadn’t fought or trained for fourteen years. Rocky Marciano was champion.
He was born Rocco Francis Marchegiano (Mark a-jahn-o) on September 1, 1923, the second son (the first died shortly after childbirth) of Pierino and Lena Marchegiano, first generation Italian immigrants who came to America after the first World War. Then Rocky and Ali sparred 70 rounds for the camera, simulating different endings to the fight. Even as champion he came to the ring in a robe bearing the colors of BrocktonHigh School (even though he dropped out in the tenth grade). His parents loved opera, ate Italian food, and had wine with dinner. Rocky didn’t trust banks, either, so he hid his cash: in the ground, inside toilet tanks, in light fixtures. One sportswriter said Marciano brought the “austere, sackcloth-and -ashes approach of a monk” to his training. He boarded a small, single engine Cessna. Walcott bounced off and threw a hard left hand. He even used a coat hanger to stuff money inside curtain rods.
Marciano was “a kind and decent man.”, He was “inherently a decent, righteous and truly wonderful guy…His innate decency and wholesomeness shine through in a dedicated glow.” Or: “We never cease to be amazed at the humility of Rocky Marciano…he treats everyone if they were the celebrity and he the awed little guy.” Another writer called him “probably the humblest of heavyweight champions.” Said another: “He reminds you of a great, friendly collie …with the grin of a shy fellow happy to be recognized, at last, as a member of the gang in good standing.” He was “the gentlest athlete I have ever known,” and again: “a man of simplicity and sincerity.”
After serving as a GI in World War II, Rocco played minor league baseball. The pilot had not flown at night before, became confused by the bad weather, and attempted to land in a field rather than the Newton airport.
Marciano died without a will. He didn’t trust lawyers or accountants, and preferred to deal in cash. At the time boxing was a diversion, a way to make a few bucks to help out his family. He golfed with priests, helped promote parish functions, even lunched with Cardinal Spellman. Life magazine called him “pure of speech” and “a clean living boy.” He was elsewhere described as “astonishingly innocent,” and “totally without deception, totally without guile.” He didn’t drink or smoke; in fact, when a host at a party for Marciano in Brockton offered the champ a drink, Rocky replied, “If you don’t mind, I’ll take an apple.”
Maybe Rocky ran to avoid an estranged relationship with Barbara. Yet his retirement years revealed a man who seemed simple, but often was not.
In 1976 Sylvester Stallone began his “Rocky” franchise. Lena’s doctor said she could have no more children; this put a fine edge on her concern for Rocco’s health.
After knocking out an old Joe Louis, Rocky got a title shot. The people of the world should be informed of this boy’s character and personality.” . It is difficult to win a fight when you can’t reach your opponent. He was a near-classic example of the triumph of classic virtues (Boston Herald Traveler, September, 1969).”
Lena prayed to St. Yet even after he had enough money Rocky went after more. The 1963 issue of Boxing Illustrated claimed: “Marciano’s knockout blow packs more explosive energy than an armour-piercing bullet and represents as much energy as would be required to spot lift 1000 pounds one foot off the ground.” Although this sort of ‘science’ was probably conducted by zealous Marciano fans, it is undeniably true that Rocky hit really hard.)
Rocky’s last big payday was a computerized fight with Muhammed Ali in 1969. Before the fight Marciano met with a priest, who after their meeting said: “That boy is no ordinary prizefighter, he is one of the most dignified, straightforward people I have ever met in my life. Sometimes he would cover his chin and hands with St. The Marchegiano’s had five more children after Rocco: Alice, Connie, Elizabeth, Louis, and Peter. An obituary in his home state of Massachusetts read:
While sportswriters criticized Marciano’s boxing shortcomings, no one criticized his character, as the following quotes show:
Five months after Marciano’s death “The Superfight” debuted in theaters. Rocco slept in the living room with the windows open, even in the winter, as if in defiance of his bout with pneumonia.
“In this age of the anti-hero and the non-hero, Rocky Marciano was the hero with whom the mass of Americans could readily identify, the hero who surmounted all difficulties by dint of hard work, dedication and perseverance. Pierino’s exposure to mustard gas during combat changed his life, but not his toughness. Rocky seemed too busy to be home.
The answer: Rocky Marciano, heavyweight boxing champion from 1952 to 1956, when at age thirty-three he retired with a perfect record (49-0, with 43 knockouts). Marciano went back into training and bought a toupee. Skehan, Rocky Marciano, Biography of a First Son, Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1977.
His upbringing was steeped in Italian customs and traditions. At the last minute Rocky decided to squeeze in an appearance at a steak house in Des Moines, Iowa. He hit his opponents on the break, after the bell, and below the belt. He retained his public life, crisscrossing across the country to give speeches, participate in benefits, and conduct business. After the Rock retired he kept running.

Marchegiano went to New York and met Al Weill, a boxing manager who tried to Americanize his name. Rocco refused but eventually he tired of having his name misspelled and mispronounced, and allowed his name to be shortened to Rocky Marciano. He usually didn’t pay anything for his cross-country trips: no plane fare, hotel fare, or meals. He made sure the people who invited him paid for everything.
The doctor was wrong. A few minutes later she came out complaining: “What is he, crazy? He didn’t want anything to do with me.” Marciano seemed more comfortable in the company of clergy than actresses. Stallone credited Chuck Wepner’s losing effort in a fight with Muhammed Ali as the inspiration for the film, yet the similarities of Rocky Balboa to Rocky Marciano are numerous and obvious.
He rarely saw his wife and children; or his parents, brothers, and sisters. Once he hit a man so hard he almost killed him. On those occasions Rocco reached opponents with his right hand, however, they fell down and didn’t get up.
As he continued to successfully defend his title, Marciano gradually drew respect from critics. His marriage was strained. He knocked out nine of his early opponents in the first round. His friends said the only thing Rocky was afraid of was being poor. Equally unique, Marciano never came out of retirement to challenge subsequent champions, a temptation very few ex-champions have overcome, much less succeeded at.
Marciano’s character was on display in his first fight with Walcott, which was a classic. Rocco’s biggest limitation was arms so short they were almost stubby. At the time many children died of pneumonia, but Rocco eventually recovered, and Lena kept her promise.
Perhaps it was his simplicity that allowed him to retire after beating everyone worth fighting. He had no boxing skills. Barbara missed Rocky, and drank too much. Anthony before his first title fight, read The Confessions of St. The champion was Jersey Joe Walcott, a ring veteran most experts picked to beat Marciano easily. The nicest thing about being champ, he said, “is that people like you.” Everyone but boxing experts, who found Rocky’s style too crude to suffer. Augustine before defending his title, and said: “The biggest thrill I could think of would be an audience with the pope?”
Rocky ran from an early age. It was an incredible run. Several opponents quit boxing after being knocked out by Marciano. Rocco was in his twenties, when most fighters hit their peak. He was awkward in the ring. He was famous, successful, and well thought of.
He and Lena settled in Brockton, a small city twenty miles south of Boston. The famous sportswriter Jimmy Cannon observed that Marciano trained “like a man practicing a holy ritual.” Before fights he would slip away to a church or chapel to pray. Rocky slowly became a better boxer, but it was his punching power that kept him undefeated. Rocky kept coming, even after Walcott knocked him down, closed his left eye, and opened cuts on his face that required fourteen stitches to close.
On August 31, 1969, Marciano planned to interrupt his business circuit and fly back to Florida to celebrate his forty-sixth birthday with his family. When he wasn’t playing sports he was running and exercising.
Not that there is anything particularly Catholic about being a teetotaler. It’s just that Marciano, though intelligent, was a very simple man who never forgot where he came from. Yet he used a wire to try to get coins back he used to make telephone calls. There was bad weather and the plane ran low on gas. He would interrupt his training schedule to attend Mass. He was invited to the White House to meet the President. The sparring film would be spliced together to match the computer outcome of the fight – a closely guarded secret that would not be revealed until “The Superfight” aired in theaters.
An investigation into the crash of the Cessna in NewtonIowa cited pilot inexperience as the cause of the crash. Rocky always apologized, but the fouling continued.
Rocky was an old school Catholic. Although he enjoyed being champion, Marciano remained unchanged.
Rocky was generous with people who were down and out, often giving them unsecured loans that were rarely paid back. Walcott’s experience kept Marciano off-balance and sometimes made him look ridiculous. Once, as a joke, the reigning sex symbol, Jayne Mansfield, was smuggled into a room where Marciano sat, alone. Or the estrangement may have developed over Rocky’s running, which may have sprung from a preoccupation with money. He would never be a classic boxer, but he worked unceasingly at improving his craft, and trained relentlessly. She and her friends prayed the Rosary at the child’s bedside and waited. They had one daughter, but Barbara miscarried when Rocky was away, and wasn’t able to have any more children, although the two did adopt a boy (Rocky Jr.). His fanaticism about physical conditioning, along with his determination and punching power, led to an unequalled record for a heavyweight champion: forty-nine professional wins, no defeats, forty-three victories by knockout. Marciano stepped inside and beat Walcott to the punch with a short right hand that traveled maybe eight inches. Ali later said that Marciano punched so hard he was sore for days after. Anthony for her son’s recovery, promising to give up her diamond engagement ring if Rocco recovered. Rocky never wrote anything down, he tried to keep track of his loans in his head, and sometimes forgot who owed him, and how much. Although he left thousands (some claim hundred of thousands) of dollars stashed away or buried underground, none of it was found to aid Barbara and the children, who were impoverished after Rocky’s death.
Marciano’s determination in the Walcott fight showed the world the new champion’s character and personality. As a boy Rocco was preoccupied with his physical condition. He even had a role in a movie. He said if the man died he would quit fighting. She smoked too, and developed a glandular problem. And Brockton loved him right back, at least in part because many of them became rich betting on Rocky’s fights.
Far behind on points late in the fight, Rocky needed a knockout to win. Walcott collapsed to the canvas and was counted out. Marciano’s body was found pinned beneath the wreckage. Asked about his reaction when flying shrapnel hit his jaw and snapped off some teeth, Pierino replied, “I just spit them out and kept coming.”
Russell Sullivan, Rocky Marciano, The Rock of His Times, 2002, University of Illinois Press, Urbana and Chicago.
Which heavyweight boxing champion in the last century knelt on his knees to pray to St. Rocky was a brawler. Until Rocco put Brockton on the national map, his hometown was best known for its shoe factories. Marciano spent hours at his opponent’s hospital bed, and in church praying for the man’s life. Then he was cut from the Chicago Cubs farm system
Individual books having players who consistently bet with certain tendencies (such as an extreme bias toward favorites or toward a certain popular team like USC)
“The main objective is that our clients get equal action on both sides,” Seba said.
Why the Line Changes
Oddsmakers at LVSC are professional sports junkies who love what they do and would probably do it for nothing if you asked them, but they do get paid for it. Oddsmakers have to determine if any changes are necessary and send out an “adjusted line.”
A round-table discussion among the 4-5 oddsmakers involved in making the line for each sport is then conducted and a consensus line is decided upon by the Odds Director before it is released to the sportsbooks.
Power ratings are the oddsmaker’s value of each team and are used as a guide to calculate a “preliminary” pointspread on an upcoming game.
Once the opening line is released by LVSC, the individual sportsbooks decide if they want to make any adjustments before offering it to the public. Also, adjustments are made after reading each team’s local newspapers to get a sense of what the coaches & players are thinking going into the game. Reasons for such adjustments include:
Oddsmakers can also change the line depending on various event-related factors such as player injuries or weather. By necessity their approach is very research-oriented and concise, since with millions of dollars at risk there is little margin for error.
Once betting begins, sportsbooks can adjust the line at any time.
Las Vegas Sports Consultants (LVSC) is the world’s premier oddsmaking company and the most respected authority on making the lines. If we’ve done that, we’ve done our job.”
For example, if the pointspread on a game is 7 and most of the money is coming in on the underdog (taking the +7), sportsbooks will then move the number down to 6 ½ to try and attract money on the favorite. In our extended interview, Seba explained that there are 4-5 oddsmakers assigned to make lines for each of the major sports (pro & college football and basketball; MLB, NHL, boxing, golf). People think it’s much more complicated, but it’s not.”
Moving the line is the oddsmaker’s effort to balance betting action, and often times such moves can have a major impact on a bettor’s decision. This usually includes having up-to-date power ratings on each team.

What Is the Line Trying to Accomplish?
There is a common misconception that point spreads represent the oddsmakers’ prediction of how many points the favorite will win by.
The opening line is the first line created by the oddsmakers, which is then sent out to sportsbooks. Of course there is an entire method to the madness on how the opening line is created. Mike Seba is a Senior Oddsmaker at LVSC and has been making lines for the last six years.
The purpose of these adjustments, like all line adjustments, is to more equally divide the betting action.
Divided action means the sportsbook is guaranteed a profit on the game because of the fee charged to the bettor (called juice or vig – typically $11 bet to win $10). The power ratings are adjusted after each game a team plays. Each of these oddsmakers bring unique opinions, strengths and weaknesses to the process. In doing so they attempt to make more attractive the team that is getting less action. Obviously, if the line comes out a week ahead of the event (which is the case in football), there is much that could happen during the week leading up to the event that could affect the line.
“You either have a passion for it or you don’t,” Seba said. Examples of non-game factors that would require an adjustment to a team’s power rating are key player injuries and player trades.
. That is not the case at all – their intent is NOT to evenly split the ATS result between the teams; rather, their goal is to attract equal betting action on both sides. For example, the public might have heavy betting interest week after week on a popular college football team such as USC. Of the 4-5 oddsmakers, generally the 2 most respected opinions are weighed more heavily by the Odds Director before he decides on the final line.
How the Opening Line Is Made
The last step in the line-making process for each oddsmaker is taking one final look to determine whether or not the line “feels right.” This is where common sense and past experience with how games are bet enters into the picture. We do this by drawing from past experiences and applying them to current situations. If an oddsmaker comes up with a preliminary line of USC -7, then an adjustment up to -7.5 or -8 would be made in response to the public’s expected USC bias. “We’re not trying to pick the team that covers the spread, we’re trying to make it a coin flip, a tough decision (for the bettor).
“The #1 thing for us is to make a line for each game that creates good two-way action. Stated another way, they want to create a line that half the people find appealing to bet one way while the other half find it appealing to bet the other way (known as ‘dividing the action’). Seba explained that it all starts with each oddsmaker creating a line on each game based upon their own personal approach. By moving the line, sportsbooks can influence how the public bets on a particular game.
Since the oddsmaker’s ultimate goal is equally dividing the betting action, public perception and betting patterns must be taken into account.
Once a game’s power rating based pointspread is determined, the oddsmaker will make adjustments to that line after considering each team’s most recent games played and previous games played against that opponent
Those who had been diagnosed with concussions also had smaller hippocampuses than the players without past concussions.
“People try to understand why some NFL players have what looks like Alzheimer’s in their forties,” Dr. “How did they get there? I think this study points out the early stages of that.”
The longer the young men had played football, the smaller their hippocampuses were and the slower their reaction time on one of the tests.
Both Bellgowan and Bazarian said it will take longer studies to find out whether a smaller hippocampus may cause problems for these athletes in the future.
“Maybe there is something going on early on,” he said. The athletes also took a computerized test to assess their cognitive abilities.
Bazarian was not involved with the new research, but has studied the brains of young athletes at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York.. Jeffrey Bazarian said. “We keep hearing about retired football players having diseases that relate back to smaller hippocampuses,” Bellgowan said. “None of these players were feeling bad but their brain structure isn’t normal.”
“Boys hear about the long-term effect on guys when they’re retired from football, but this shows that 20-year-olds might be having some kind of effect,” said Patrick Bellgowan, the study’s senior author from the Laureate Institute for Brain Research in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – The brains of college football players may already display the effects of years of taking hits, according to a new brain imaging study.
For now, Bellgowan suggested that parents and coaches take a conservative approach when dealing with student athletes by taking them to specialists when they walk off the field with a headache.
The symptoms of CTE, which tend to set in years after the last traumas, often include memory loss, aggression and dementia.
The researchers write in JAMA that they didn’t find any differences in behavior between players and non-players, but Bellgowan told Reuters Health that a smaller hippocampus is linked to depression, schizophrenia and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
There has been growing concern over whether the connection between contact sports – like football – and CTE, which is a brain disease known to affect some athletes who experience repeated hits to the head, may extend to younger players.
Between June 2011 and August 2013 the researchers recruited 25 college football players who had been diagnosed with a concussion, 25 players without a history of diagnosed concussion and 25 similar young men who had never played.
The participants had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of their brains and researchers used the images to measure the volume of certain brain regions. “Maybe this is just the precursor of it.”
Players who had been diagnosed with concussions and those who had been playing for years had smaller hippocampuses – a brain structure critical to memory – compared to those who never played football or played for fewer years, researchers found.

“The conservative approach is what I’m hoping to get out there,” he said.
Bellgowan is also on the faculty at the University of Tulsa, where, he said, “Participation of the athletic department was essential to this work.”
The researchers found that college athletes had hippocampuses between 17 percent and 26 percent smaller than non-athletes
